About

Timaru Booksellers sits at the north end of Stafford Street, near the Bay Hill and Port Loop lights. It opened in July 2020 as Bay Hill Books and describes itself as stocking “a curated selection of wonderful new and secondhand books”, with author talks, poetry readings, storytime and book clubs filling the calendar.

Since Readers Book Exchange further down Stafford Street closed in March 2024 after nearly 60 years, this is the only shop in Timaru where you will find secondhand books on proper bookshop shelves. The shop’s website lists its live shelf stock, so you can check for a title before you visit and click-and-collect at no cost.

Its sister shop in Geraldine (The Page & Prose, being rebranded Owls Do Cry) sells new books.

Price tip: Secondhand books priced individually alongside new titles; ask about the loyalty programme.

What you’ll find

A curated, mixed shelf: new releases and New Zealand titles sitting next to good-condition secondhand fiction, non-fiction and children’s books.
