About

Wānaka’s best bet for secondhand books is the Hospice Shop at 11A Brownston Street, close to the town centre. Unlike most op shops, it gives books their own space: the official Lake Wānaka Tourism listing notes “a dedicated Book Room” alongside clothing, sporting equipment, homewares, CDs and pictures.

The shop is run by Otago Community Hospice, which also operates the Vogel Street, Mosgiel, Alexandra, Milton and Ōamaru hospice shops, and raises money for specialist palliative care in the Upper Clutha. Clean, resaleable donations — books included — can be dropped off during opening hours.

It is a short walk from The Next Chapter, Wānaka’s independent new-book shop, at 72 Brownston Street.

Price tip: Charity-shop pricing.

What you’ll find

A separate Book Room of donated fiction, non-fiction and children’s books — the closest thing to a secondhand bookshop in the Upper Clutha.
