About
The Hospice South shop at 106 Gorge Road is the closest thing central Queenstown has to a book browse. Queenstown has no permanent secondhand bookshop, so this charity store — a short walk up Gorge Road from the town centre — is where locals and long-stay visitors swap holiday reads. Skyline’s guide to Queenstown op shops singles it out as “a treasure trove of preloved books, games, sports equipment, and more”.
It is one of six Hospice South shops across Southland and the Wakatipu (the others are in Invercargill, Gore, Winton and Te Anau), and every sale helps fund free specialist hospice care for local families. Hospice South says it receives less than half its funding from government.
The Salvation Army Family Store is a few doors down at 71 Gorge Road, so it is easy to check both in one trip.
Price tip: Charity-shop pricing — paperbacks typically a few dollars.
What you’ll find
Holiday paperbacks, popular fiction, outdoor and travel non-fiction, children’s books, puzzles and board games — stock turns over quickly with Queenstown’s transient population.
