About
Wastebusters — “Wasties” to locals — has been Wānaka’s community recycling centre and reuse shop for more than 25 years. It is a 100% community-owned, not-for-profit social enterprise on the corner of Ballantyne and Riverbank Roads, and it is open seven days, 9am to 5pm.
Lake Wānaka Tourism calls it “a treasure hunter’s dream”, listing books among second-hand clothing, vintage gems, homewares, furniture and outdoor gear, with new stock arriving daily. Building materials, tools and bigger items are out in the reuse yard. In 2025 it took the Supreme award at the Wānaka Chamber of Commerce Business Awards.
Because it is open on Sundays, it is the one used-book stop in the Queenstown Lakes you can rely on at weekends.
Price tip: Reuse-shop pricing — among the cheapest used books in the district.
What you’ll find
An ever-changing mix of donated paperbacks, outdoor and travel books, non-fiction and children’s books among the clothing and homewares.
