About
The Book Vault is Nelson’s newest secondhand bookshop, opened in September 2025 inside Founders Heritage Park on Atawhai Drive. It occupies the park’s replica 1876 New South Wales Bank building, and the old bank safe has been turned into a “dragon’s cave” guarding some of the best children’s books.
The shop exists because Founders had around 100,000 donated books stored between its famous annual book fairs. Coordinator Emma Carruthers told Top South Now that Nelson’s secondhand bookshop landscape had become thin — Brett’s Book Exchange in Richmond closed in January 2025 after 34 years and sent its unsold stock to Founders — and The Book Vault was set up to give the city year-round access to cheap used books.
It is staffed by around 20 volunteers and plans reading groups and creative-writing sessions. Combine it with a wander around the heritage village; the park itself is open daily.
Price tip: Charity pricing on donated stock; the park describes it as affordable, quality pre-loved books.
What you’ll find
Row upon row of donated fiction and non-fiction, a children’s section with couches and beanbags (plus the dragon’s-cave safe), classic literature, NZ titles, and records and CDs.
