About
Otago Community Hospice’s Vogel Street shop opened in a renovated warehouse in 2020 — just ten days before the first Covid lockdown — and has become one of Dunedin’s best-loved op shops. The book trade happens in a separate space: a downstairs bookshop that The Spinoff called “secret”, because you have to know to look for it.
The Spinoff ranked it third among all Dunedin secondhand bookshops, ahead of Port Chalmers and the exchanges, for its chaotic, scavenger-friendly shelves: Dorothy Sayers turning up in cooking, a “miscellaneous” bottom shelf on most bays, and a second enormous room of older stock where nothing costs more than a dollar. The ODT reports the separate bookshop area is a popular destination in its own right.
Get in through the Bargain Basement door on Vogel Street or from Cumberland Street. Habitat’s Dunedin Op Shop is around the corner on Gordon Street, and every purchase supports hospice care in Otago.
Price tip: The Spinoff: most books under $5, with a back room where nothing costs more than $1.
What you’ll find
A large, loosely sorted charity bookshop — crime, literary fiction, cookery, NZ non-fiction, children’s — plus a $1 back room of older stock. Music and records are in the same area.
