About

Smith’s Bookshop is a historic Christchurch name now trading from The Tannery in Woolston. Post-quakes it shifted from the towering multi-floor secondhand institution many locals remember toward a mix of new illustrated and coffee-table books plus secondhand, rare and antiquarian stock.

Spinoff ranked it last in its pure-secondhand list and suggested it’s best when you need an obscure out-of-print volume and are willing to pay. Still, the Tannery setting makes it an easy combine with nearby Book Barn on Ferry and a Woolston / Opawa afternoon. Open daily 10am–5pm.

Price tip: New coffee-table and rare/antiquarian stock can be expensive; secondhand shelves vary.

What you’ll find

Visitor notes & reviews

Historic name, mixed new/used/rare focus — strong for specialists, less so for cheap paperback hunts.

“More coffee-table and rare/obscure volumes than a fossick shop; come for specialist needs, not bargains.”
