Road-trip tips for book hunters

Small-town op shops and volunteer-run bookshops keep short or seasonal hours — many close on Sundays and some open only a few mornings a week. Each listing says when hours are unconfirmed; treat those as “call ahead”. Cash is still king at several independent dealers.

Charity chains with books appear throughout the island: Salvation Army Family Stores, Hospice shops (Otago, Nelson Tasman, Southland, Marlborough and Hospice South Canterbury), Red Cross, Habitat ReStores and council ReUse shops. Dedicated secondhand bookshops are rarer — those are the ones worth planning a detour for.

Spotted a shop we’re missing, or one that has closed? Hours change; we check sources each pass and record closures rather than leaving stale map pins.
