Op shop with books

Opawa Community Church Op Shop — Hillsborough

A op shop with used books in Hillsborough, Christchurch. Part of the Greater Christchurch secondhand bookshops directory — see also our NZ used-book price guide.

About

The Opawa Community Op-Shop is run by Opawa Community Church from a brick building behind the church at 158 Opawa Road, on the Opawa–Hillsborough border in south-east Christchurch. Proceeds support the church’s community work, and the shop is open midweek only: Tuesday to Thursday, 10am–4pm.

For book hunters it punches well above its size. On our visit a whole corner room was given over to books, with a sign reading “ALL BOOKS $1 each” — some of the cheapest secondhand books we’ve found in a Christchurch op shop. Shelves are tidily labelled by category: fiction and non-fiction bookcases, plus metal shelving for faith, cooking, sport and health titles. At a dollar a book it’s an easy place to take a punt, and we always seem to leave with a hidden gem or two. Ask about the back room near the records too — extra books are sometimes shelved there. Pair it with Book Barn on Ferry and Smith’s Bookshop at The Tannery, or Nurse Maude in Beckenham, for a south-east Christchurch book crawl.

Price tip: All books $1 each on our visit.

What you’ll find

A dedicated book corner where every book is $1 — fiction and non-fiction bookcases plus shelves labelled Faith, Cooking, Sports and Health. Extra books sometimes in the back room near the records. Stock turns over often; hidden gems are common.
