About

Slightly Foxed occupies the Tyne Street side of the Evening Mail Building at 11 Tyne Street, in the heart of Ōamaru’s Victorian Historic Precinct — the Oamaru Whitestone Civic Trust lists it as the building’s tenant. The name is a book-trade term for the brown spotting old paper develops, and a fair hint at the stock: “quality books bought and sold”, in the shop’s own words.

It is the only dedicated secondhand bookshop between Timaru and Dunedin. The town’s old book exchange is long gone (Timaru’s Readers Book Exchange owner told the ODT Ōamaru’s had closed before his did in 2024), and Adventure Books, the precinct’s rare-book specialist, moved to Christchurch in late 2024.

The shop is open every day and still posts weekly new arrivals, so it rewards a return visit. Combine it with a wander through the precinct’s whitestone warehouses and the Steampunk HQ.

Price tip: Priced individually by condition and rarity; everyday reading copies alongside collectable stock.

What you’ll find

A general secondhand stock with depth in literature, New Zealand titles and history; the owners also post their own reading notes on classics like Trollope.
